Identify the incorrect statement related to PCl5 from the following
Question : Identify the incorrect statement related to PCl5 from the following :
(1) Three equatorial P-Cl bonds make an angle of 120° with
each other.
(2) Two axial P-Cl bonds make an angle of 180° with each
other.
(3) Axial P-Cl bonds are longer than equatorial P-Cl bonds.
(4) PCl5 molecule is non-reactive.
answer : from all above options the correct answer is option “(4) PCl5 molecule is non-reactive.” because PCl5 contains longer and weaker axial bonds that is why PCl5 is reactive and in option 4th , given that PCl5 molecule is non-reactive hence this is incorrect statement about PCl5 , that is why we have marked this option correct answer as per our question requirement.
Phosphorus in PCl5 is sp3d hybridized . All five hybrid orbitals in sp3d hybridization are not equal. There are three equatorial P-Cl and two axial bonds in PCl5 with angle 120 degree and 90 degree respectively. The structure of PCl5 is as follows
PCl5 is reactive due to weaker axial P-Cl bond.
